The Dealer Quote Checklist
7 things to check on any dealer quote before you sign anything. Takes 5 minutes. It can save you thousands.
Get the out-the-door price, in writing
Ask for one total that includes the price, every fee, taxes, title and registration. If they only talk monthly payment, stop and ask again. A payment can hide a high price, a longer loan or extras.
Make sure the car matches the listing
Check the VIN, trim, transmission, mileage and options against the ad and the window sticker. We've caught a dealer listing the wrong transmission. Mistakes like that change what the car is worth.
Compare the price to the market
Look up what the same year, trim and mileage are selling for within a few hundred miles. The sticker or asking price is where negotiating starts, not where it ends.
Find the add-ons and "market adjustments"
Look for nitrogen tires, VIN etching, paint or fabric protection, anti-theft packages and "ADM" or "market adjustment" lines. These are almost always negotiable, and often removable.
Separate the government fees from the dealer fees
Tax, title and registration are set by the state. Doc fees, prep fees and "dealer services" are set by the dealer. Ask what every fee is for, and question anything the dealer added.
Keep your trade-in as its own number
Your trade-in value should be its own line, not mixed into the price or payment. Get an outside offer first (CarMax, Carvana or another dealer) so you know what it's really worth.
Check the financing and the extras
Compare the APR and loan length to a pre-approval from your bank or credit union, and look at the total cost of the loan. Extended warranties, GAP, tire and wheel coverage and maintenance plans are optional and negotiable. Don't let them get bundled in.
⚠️ Red flags: slow down if you see these
- "We can't email the numbers. You have to come in."
- "This price is only good today."
- The add-ons are "already on the car" and "can't be removed."
- The total jumps between the quote and the final paperwork.
- They ask for a deposit before you've seen the out-the-door number.
